I fell in love with the concept and sport of Speed Stacking at a State PE Conference 5 years ago. Students that sport stack on a regular basis have shown increases in test scores and levels of concentration. This is achieved by students using both their right and left sides of their brain. When students sport stack they are crossing the "midline" of their bodies and developing new connections in their brains. These new connections help to spur brain growth which in turn promotes greater academic achievement. The students have joined me in their passion for the sport. We LOVE stacking here at BHS!!!
High school kids enjoy being little again with the pre-school students. We engaged in a Christmas Game - "The Whoville Express". Students were either Whoville citizens or the Grinch. Very similar to the movie, the Grinch were preventing Christmas from coming. At the end of the game, Whoville citizens were successful in getting Christmas back. One of my favorite things to do is open the minds of kids to new activities and forms of exercise and fun. I learned about Spikeball at a National Conference a few years ago. Once I played I fell in love with it. It demonstrates maximum teamwork and effort. The purpose of the game resembles volleyball, except the net is on the ground rather than above ground. Students seemed to really enjoy this activity because they were able to compete with one another and it was something brand new. For a few weeks students in both elementary and high school will be working with a Hockey Unit. Within the unit students will learn the fundamentals and mechanics it takes to be successful. Students will also participate in compeitions to check their accuracy of passing and shooting. Once to a mastery level students played full games of hockey! Elementary students have been awaiting the football unit since August, and it's finally here. Students will be going through a three week unit of Football. Learning the correct ways to throw, catch and run with a football. The 4-6 grade students will advance to a mastery level where they will draw up their own plays and try running them against a defense. Below are 5th grade students working on the basics of catching and throwing. At the start of the year I began a Run/Walk club that happens everyday before school for all students, staff and community members. After 3 successful months of the club the Hastings Tribune ventured down to get a story on us. After waiting three weeks for the article to come to press it finally did, front page of the Saturday paper. One week later I am being informed by family that Blue Hill Run/Walk Club is now going viral and in other states. Sure enough, we were seen in papers such as; Miami, Lancaster, PA, San Antonio, Indiana, Seattle, WA, Westport, CT, Midland, MI, Gettysburg, PA, College Station, TX and many more not named. The kids have made this such a fun and motivating experience. The community and staff have given more support than I ever imagined. Let's keep logging those miles! Students are going through a four week racquet unit. The sports will include; badminton, speedminton, tennis and pickleball. Students learned about the history, rules/regulations and the skills/fundamentals of the game. In the pictures below you will find part of a freshman class during a round robin tournament. For 2 weeks students have been learning about the game of Volleyball. We have worked on the skills and fundamentals it takes in order to be successful, all while learning more about the game. Below you will find pictures of students K-6 engaged in the skills of the game.
After one month the mileage total is at 2,136. This community and school has totally and completely outdone what I imagined they were capable of. Keep loggin' those miles, folks!
